Jack Zbiegien

In January 2014 my life changed forever when a simple visit to my primary doctor resulted in blood tests that identified I was experiencing "Leukemic Activity".  I had no idea what that meant but meeting with Oncologists at St Luke's it was quickly identified that I had Acute Myeloid Leukemia.  At 39 this was a major blow to our lives resulting in a journey that included:

> 100 doses of chemotherapy

>300 transfusions of blood products

Three (3) relapses

One in my spine which included a consideration of Hospice

Twenty lumbar punctures to provide chemo to my spine to stop a relapse

A bone marrow transplant

All to have a chance to survive

The hardest conversation you can ever have is sitting with your 12 and 15 year old sons and explain to them that no matter how hard you fight, sometimes the opponent is so great you may just not win.  We had to prepare them for a potential visit to hospice after my last relapse, but gratefully the team at Froedtert and my Oncologist (Marcelo Pasquini) never gave up.

It didn't deter our spirit and Karin and I worked hard to ensure our boys got through the setback while balancing school, sports and repeated visits for inpatient treatments to achieve one goal....see my son's graduate high school.

What struck me during the journey was the Caring and Compassion that came from our community to help a family through this experience.  We were financially impacted by the setback and the community showed up providing meals, gas cards, support to ensure our family could focus on what was important in the recovery.

As a result, we identified an opportunity of purpose by developing this organization to provide engaging, fun events to raise awareness of those who are diagnosed with a blood cancer so we can provide financial support.  Our mission is to deliver on a goal of "Delivering A Cure" for the various challenges that come along with the diagnosis.
